Don’t throw film away!
« Don’t throw film away! » is the slogan of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF), taken from the Manifesto that was published on the occasion of its 70th anniversary. Following this call the Cinémathèque de Toulouse and the Institut Jean Vigo have joined forces and launched a project to save the filmic memory of the Languedoc-Roussillon, Midi-Pyrénées and Aquitaine Regions. First, we try to find and/or (re)discover films that private persons, companies or associations may still have in their possession, often forgotten in moist cellars or hot attics, in order to preserve them in the best conditions. These films, image carriers of history, should not be destroyed or forgotten: they deserve to be shared with all the people of our regions. These films constitute a primary element in the knowledge and consideration of our local history and in the preservation of our regional memory. This cinematographic heritage is at the same time a representation of our regional history.
Film on celluloid can be preserved for a very long time (contrary to today’s digital carriers!), as long as it is taken care of in a professional way. As film archives, the Cinémathèque de Toulouse and the Institut Jean Vigo are the only institutions in our regions to have the know-how and the technical means to save and preserve the films in optimal conditions. When it is not treated meticulously, the film carrier may undergo several degradations (scratches, dust, moist…) that will finally lead to impossibility to exploit the material. It is thus of the utmost importance to save these films for today’s and future generations.
The Institut Jean Vigo and the Cinémathèque de Toulouse have thus developped an important project around the Film Heritage of the South – Mémoire filmique du Sud
The first stage of was the launch of an important campaign to inform the public and to collect films. The films that have been found and deposited at our archives have been treated meticulously in order to clean and repair them for digitization, to be able to show them on this website. At the same time, the original filmic material is being preserved at our archives.
This is a work in progress, so this website will become richer and richer according to our new discoveries in the coming months and years. Follow us!
