Mémoire filmique Pyrénées-Méditerranée – Pyrenees-Mediterranean Film Memory
“Don’t Throw Film Away” is the slogan launched by the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) on the occasion of its 70th anniversary in 2008. The partnership forged in 2012 by La Cinémathèque de Toulouse and Institut Jean Vigo – both members of FIAF – in the interests of the film memory of the Languedoc-Roussillon, Midi-Pyrenees and Aquitaine regions is fully in line with this perspective. Its purpose is above all to (re)discover films that individuals, companies and/or associations still have in their possession but which are often piled up in damp cellars or in overheated attics, in order to preserve them in the best conditions.
In 2014, thanks to the support from the Euroregion, Filmoteca de Catalunya and Arxiu del So i de la Imatge of Majorca have joined this platform to improve it with outstanding audiovisual documents in the valorisation, through images, of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.
Films in the traditional formats can keep for a long time, provided they are subjected to the appropriate treatment; however, if they are not carefully treated and stored, the film surface is exposed to different kinds of damage (scratches, dust, mould…) that render them difficult or simply impossible to use. Film libraries have the technical resources and skills needed to save and preserve films in good conditions. The films thus recovered through a communication, awareness and long-term collection work are thoroughly cleaned, repaired and, in some cases, digitized.
The collaboration between these four archives now allows to draw attention to the historical links between the communities of Catalonia, Midi-Pyrénées, Languedoc-Roussillon and the Balearic Islands, and rediscover an image of the past of these four partner regions. The films, digitized and shared online, are indeed powerful witnesses to a transregional cultural reality, made visible and accessible to all.
This portal aims to improve every month with new discoveries and our work will move.
