From the Pyrenees to the Mediterranean: South Film Memory crosses borders / 2015

Two years ago already, the Cinémathèque de Toulouse and Institut Jean Vigo joined together to create the web portal « South Film Memory ». The aim was primarily to find movies dealing with southern regions of France that people, companies and / or non-profit institutions were still holding.

This operation was designed to keep these films – often unique – in the best possible conditions. The reels  collected were carefully cleaned, repaired and watched. Afterwards they were sometimes digitized in order to be showed to a wide audience on the website. Since it went online on September 2013, 107,000 people visited the site, constantly enriched with precious images of our regions, towns and villages, our craft and traditions of the twentieth century.

Recently, thanks to the support of the Euroregion Pyrenees-Mediterranean, the project has expanded to two new partners: the Filmoteca de Catalunya and the Arxiu del So the i Imatge de Mallorca. The site is going to get richer thanks to the images of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, making the web portal a reference place for those who are interested in these territories and their common identity beyond the borders. Researchers, professionals of history and image as well as each of us will soon be able to take a walk through the time and space in search of these visual evidence of a trans-regional reality made of common details as well as differences and complex cultural and historical ties between Catalonia, Midi-Pyrénées, Languedoc-Roussillon and the Balearic Islands.
